Finding the Best Location
Location is one of the most important considerations to most home
buyers. Finding your ideal location
There are many things to consider. A location that
is ideal for one buyer often is not for another, because of
differing needs. There are many things to consider. These are
typical considerations, but your list likely will be different:
- Nature of neighborhood
- Local crime rate
- Suitability for children
- Driving time and distance to one or more places of employment
- Walking or driving time and distance to one or more schools
- Driving time and distance to one or more churches
- Driving time and distance to Salt Lake Airport
- Driving time and distance to one or more shopping areas
- Driving time and distance to various restaurants and places
of evening entertainment
- Driving time and distance to golf courses, sports centers,
exercise facilities, and any number of other facilities of
special interest to an individual or family
- Zoning ordinances that may prohibit or restrict anything
important to a buyer, such as running a home business, erecting
a tall structure, having farm animals, etc.
Setting your priorities
Unfortunately, almost everyone has to accept some location
compromises, because, for example:
- Zoning ordinances in the best neighborhoods prohibit things
some people want to have or do
- A location that otherwise would be perfect is too far from
work, school or something else important
- A location that otherwise would be perfect is not suitable
for children
- A location that otherwise would be perfect is too expensive
In view of the reality that you probably will have to accept
some compromises, you not only should prepare a list of location
considerations that have special importance to you and your
family, you should prioritize them according to their relative
importance to you. Thinking through and even writing down what
you need and want in advance of your home search will:
- Make it easier to clearly communicate your needs and wants
to your Realtor
- Make it more likely that your Realtor will be able to help
you find a home that will be ideal for you
- Reduce the chance that you will be influenced emotionally
to buy a home that will not be right for you
- Provide logical basis to know when you have found a place
that meets your needs
